Why You'll Love This Smoothie
One of my favourite ways to start my mornings is with a refreshing, nourishing, and energizing smoothie. They're incredibly easy to make and customize with your favourite fruits, vegetables, nutritional boosters and supplements, whatever you like.
Why do I love this Strawberry Watermelon Smoothie so much?
- Hydrating powerhouse - when it comes to fruits, watermelon and strawberries are both hydrating superstars!
- No added sugar - unlike many store-bought smoothies that are often loaded with added sugars, the strawberries, watermelon and banana in this recipe provide just the right amount of natural sweetness on their own.
- Kid-friendly - this smoothie is incredibly popular with kids! It's a great way to give them the nutrients and hydration they need especially during those hot summer days.

Ingredients
Please see the recipe card below for exact quantities.

- Unsweetened almond milk - I love using this as the base for many of my smoothies due to its creamy taste with no added sugar and relatively few calories. But you can use whatever milk you like.
- Watermelon - our hydration superstar that's also packed with many essential nutrients. I like using frozen watermelon chunks for their convenience.
- Strawberries - whether fresh or frozen, this delicious berry hydrates while providing vitamin C and antioxidants.
- Banana - use frozen ripe bananas to add creaminess and thickening (which will be important to balance out our water-heavy fruits)
- Greek yogurt - because of the water content found in our watermelon, using Greek yogurt (or any other yogurt) will help thicken up our smoothie.
- Lemon juice - packs a bright, zesty pop of citrus.
- Vanilla extract - to enhance our smoothie with some vanilla flavour.
- Hemp seeds - our nutritious booster that will add fibre and healthy fats.
Instructions

STEP 1: Prepare your ingredients (wash, peel, chop) and then add them into the blender.

STEP 2: Blend ingredients thoroughly until smooth. Pour and enjoy!

Toasty's Tips
- Use frozen bananas - freeze your ripe bananas before blending them - they have an amazing ability to thicken smoothies, and add sweetness and creaminess when blended from frozen. I like to keep a bunch stored in the freezer at all times - they're also super handy for making homemade ice cream!
- Add nutritional boosters - I'm using hemp seeds but use whatever you like! Smoothies are so easy to customize - so throw in your favourite types of seeds, supplement powders, superfoods, etc.
- When adding ingredients, make sure the wet ingredients are added so they're closest to the blender blade. This will make sure the blending is smooth and even.
- Don't use a wimpy blender. Use a high-powered blender to avoid ending up with chunky ingredients that don't fully blend. This helps ensure smooth, consistent results every time.
What Type of Blender Should I Use?
I strongly recommend using a high-powered blender for making smoothies. In the past, I've tried making smoothies using an older, slower blender that struggled with crushing fruits (especially frozen fruits) and often produced inconsistent, chunky results. Switching to a high-powered blender (a Nutribullet Pro 900, and later a Vitamix A3500) made a huge difference and is what I recommend to everyone to ensure you end up with smooth and creamy smoothies every time.

Can I Refrigerate My Smoothie?
I always recommend drinking smoothies right after they're blended for optimal freshness, flavour and nutrition. While smoothies can typically last no more than a day or two in the fridge max (in an air-tight sealed container), they start losing flavour and freshness very soon after blending. If you end up with any leftover smoothie or wish to meal prep in advance to save time, I recommend freezing them instead, where they can stay fresh for up to a month.
Meal Prep Tips for Smoothies
I love meal prepping my smoothies in advance to save time. While smoothies can be difficult to refrigerate, you can still batch prep and freeze your smoothies for a longer shelf life. In the freezer, they'll typically last for up to a month, or even longer. Here are 3 easy ways to meal-prep smoothies in the freezer to save time:
- Ice cube tray - pour and freeze smoothie using an ice cube tray. This makes them easy to pop out and either thaw or blend quickly whenever you're ready to enjoy them!
- Freezer jars - freeze smoothie in a mason jar (or other sealable container), and then thaw it in the fridge for 2-3 hours whenever you're ready to enjoy it.
- Portion and freeze ingredients - chop up your fruits/vegetables and freeze them in a zip-lock bag. You can then quickly throw the frozen ingredients into a blender along with the liquids and boosters whenever you're ready to enjoy it!
